Surfing in South Africa and the Regional Contests
Surfing South Africa (SSA) is the recognized National governing body for the sport of surfing in South Africa and is a member of the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC).
Surfing South Africa is a founding member the World’s governing body for the sport.
Surfing SA is responsible for all aspects of surfing in South Africa from entry-level to transformation and development to selection of all National Teams.
Provincial bodies are Western Cape Surfing Association, Eastern Cape Surfing Association and KwaZulu-Natal Surfing Association.
Surfing SA is also responsible for the development of Club and School surfing throughout South Africa.
For those who enjoy the serene rhythms of the ocean, the beaches around George provide the perfect setting for surfing,sunbathing, beachcombing, and leisurely picnics by the sea. With the gentle waves lapping at the shore or overhead barrels at Victoria Bay.Be it a social surf before or after work or competitive surfing in one of the many contests held at “Vic”.
The Reef Junior Surf Contest takes place at Victoria Bay from 19 till 21 July 2024.This contest is for boys and girls from Under 12 all the way to Under 18’s.These Groms are the future stars of the surfing scene .The actions will be hot with some radical surfing and the winter swell is sure to play along.
SA Olympic Team will compete at the 2024 Olympics.The contest takes place not in Paris,France where the rest of the Olympics will take place but halfway around the world at the worldclass break at Teahupoo in Tahiti,French Polynesia.The contest will run from 26 July till 11 August. At the last Olympics Bianca Buitendag ,the George local, was on the podium.This year SA will be represented by Matt Mcgillivray,Jordy Smith and Sarah Baum.The manager is Rezar De Nicker and the coach will be Chris Bond
SA Masters Championships takes place at Victoria Bay from 7 August till 11 August.This promises to great fun when the older guys hit the break at Vic.We look forward to a busy weekend with all the Old Ballies and their families flocking to George .
The J Bay Classic presented by Corona takes place at the renown Super Tubes in Jeffreys Bay with the contest window from 14 June till 23 June 2024.The World Tour will arrive in J Bay in the weeks leading up to the contest.Multiple world champion Stephanie Gilmore will take a break from her year long break to dazzle the crowds.The world famous Mark Occhilupo will also put in an appearance .Amongst the women to be on the lookout for are Coco Ho and Sally Fitzgibbons.In the mens division be on the lookout for the Greatest of All Time Kelly Slater and SA’s own Mickey February.
