The George Agricultural Show
The George Agricultural show is the flagship of the Outeniqua Show Society. The Outeniqua Show Society was established in 1861 and the first agricultural show was held in February 1862. In 1859 the governor, Sir George Grey approved state funds of which £300 were allocated to “Big Shows”. Today the George Agricultural show is still a “big show” with nearly 18 000 visitors who visited the show in 2018.
This year the show takes place from 29 Aug till 1 Sept and it promises to be a bumper filled event. A Show is synonymous with animals doing their thing. From horses in the arena, sheep, dairy cows, poultry etc will all be on display and groomed to perfection The farmers brimming with pride after endless hours preparing for the big day.
There will be entertainment for old and young. The Show Queen will be chosen at the glamourise Show Dance on 16 Aug and don’t forget to dress up Gatsby style. Even the men will not lose out when Mr Show gets chosen as well. The talent competition finals will be held on Sat 31 Aug at 3pm when the drama and singing events will be concluded. There will also be entertainment for the ladies.
For the kiddies there will be jumping castles, face painting and a merry go round . The junior farmers will also get their chance to shine during the Junior show.
A business breakfast will be held on 29 August. The speaker for the event will be Christo van der Rheede, former CEO of AgriSA. The theme will be “Ons grondwetlike demokrasie, ons enigste hoop mits dit n werklikheid word vir alle Suid Afrikaners”.
There will be many stalls and displays on offer. From farming implements and vehicles to food and drinks stalls. Clothing, toys etc will also tempt the shoppers. There will even be a cheese and wine area to socialize. Keep an eye open for the vintage tractors doing there thing after being lovingly restored and maintained.
On Sat evening 31 August, Riaan Benade and his band will be performing. We look forward to the band staying with us at Acorn Guesthouse.
The George Motor Club will also be running their Stock Car races on Sat 31 August. It promises be a noisy, fun filled event. Cars of all shapes and sizes will be performing.
Tickets prices vary from R30 for children to R100 for adults. Prices vary from day to day. Why not buy a weekend ticket starting at R80 for children to R230 for adults.
All we have to hope for is some good weather. Otherwise bring warm clothes and a rain coat!!!!!
